Power restored to 1,000 homes, businesses in Waianae

Advertiser Staff

Electrical service was restored to about 1,000 Hawaiian Electric Co. customers in Wai'anae at about 6:30 this morning, said company spokesman Darren Pai.

A car or truck ran over a fire hydrant about 1:30 a.m. and damaged a utility pole, sending water spewing onto Waianae Valley Road and causing HECO to temporarily shut down power while repairs were made to the damaged pole. Repairs to the pole have been completed, Pai said.

As for the broken fire hydrant, a Board of Water Supply spokeswoman said water service to its customers won't be affected.

The vehicle that struck the hydrant fled the scene. At one point more than a foot of water was reported on the road, and traffic was being diverted around it.

The hydrant is located at 85-184 Waianae Valley Road.
