Kona motorcycle victim identified

A motorcyclist who died Saturday from injuries suffered in a collision in Kona on the Big Island was identified by police yesterday as Edward L. Billman, 55, of Na'alehu.

A female passenger on the Harley-Davidson that Billman was operating was transported to The Queen's Medical Center. Big Island police said she remains in critical condition.

The motorcycle was traveling north on Hawai'i Belt Road when it collided with a 1999 Ford Ranger pickup truck making a left turn at the 106-mile marker in Kona.

The collision was reported to police at 2:05 p.m. Billman died at Kona Community Hospital at 4:45 p.m. He and his passenger were not wearing helmets, police said.

The driver of the pickup truck and his passenger were not hurt.



PAUL TSUKIYAMA TO HEAD STATE OIP

Paul T. Tsukiyama, who has worked as an attorney for city and state government, has been named director of the Office of Information Practices.

The OIP oversees the state's open-record laws. The appointment is effective Nov. 9, according to Gov. Linda Lingle's office.
