Two-hitter lifts Sharks over Honu

Advertiser Staff

Shingo Matsuzaki struck out 10 in five innings and two others combined with him on a two-hitter to lead the Honolulu Sharks over the North Shore Honu, 2-0, last night in Hawaii Winter Baseball at Hans L'Orange Park.

Matsuzaki (1-0) allowed a hit and walk in his five innings for the Sharks. Ryan Ouellette followed with three scoreless innings, allowing the other hit, and Chad Thall pitched a perfect ninth for his second save.

In the earlier game, Anthony Hatch and Todd Martin each homered and drove in two runs, leading the West Oahu CaneFires to a 5-3 win against the Waikiki BeachBoys.

The game was shortened to seven innings due to a pre-game agreement by both teams to prevent overworking their pitchers. Yesterday was the seventh straight day of games for both.

SHORT HOPS: Pitcher Kanekoa Texeira will join the Honolulu Sharks, HWB officials announced yesterday. Texeira, a 2004 graduate of Kamehameha, was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in 2006 out of Saddleback JC. He pitched at Low-A Kannapoli this past season. The league said he is an injury replacement. Texeira is from Kula, Maui.
