Hearings today to determine fate for 2 soldiers

Advertiser Staff and News Reports

Hearings will begin today at Wheeler Army Airfield to determine if two Schofield Barracks soldiers will face a military court-martial on charges that they murdered an Iraqi detainee.

Sgt. 1st Class Trey A. Corrales, 34, of San Antonio, and Spc. Christopher P. Shore, 25, of Winder, Ga., were charged with one count of premeditated murder in the death of the unidentified man.

The shooting occurred June 23 in al Saheed near the northern city of Kirkuk, according to a charge sheet.

According to the Army, a platoon of Army scouts entered a house in search of enemy forces believed to be responsible for planting roadside bombs.

Corrales is accused of shooting the Iraqi detainee multiple times with his rifle, and then directing Shore to also shoot the man. Shore also is accused in the charge sheet with shooting the detainee multiple times.

In an e-mail to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Shore said he heard shots, and found Corrales standing over a badly injured man. Shore said Corrales ordered him to "finish him," but Shore said he purposely missed when he fired his M-4 carbine.

Corrales is a 14-year Army veteran who earned two Bronze Stars in Afghanistan, his brother, Jeffrey J. Corrales of San Antonio, has said.

Both soldiers are assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment.

The Article 32 hearings are similar to a civilian preliminary hearing or grand jury.

Shore's Article 32 hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m.

About 25 witnesses are expected to be called, and the hearing is expected to take two days.

The Article 32 hearing for Corrales is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Monday.
