Search ends for missing boater off Waianae

Advertiser Staff

The Coast Guard today suspended its search for a missing boater off the Wai'anae Coast.

The search for Charles D. Wilson, 56, was called off at 5:30 p.m. after the cutter Kiska, a helicopter and C-130 aircraft covered a 2,300-mile radius.

The Coast Guard is not planning to continue the search.

Wilson left Ke'ehi Boat Harbor sometime between Oct. 9 and Oct. 10 to relocate his 27-foot sailboat "H20IQ" at Wai'anae Boat Harbor, police said.

A Coast Guard patrol helicopter spotted Wilson's disabled sailboat yesterday at 9:30 a.m. with its sail in the water about 30 miles off Ka'ena Point.

The Coast Guard started a search after not finding Wilson on the boat. The search was extended overnight and through today.
