Hilo Intermediate teacher wins state honors

A teacher from Hilo Intermediate School was named the 2008 State Teacher of the Year at today's meeting of the Board of Education.

Pascale Pinner of the Hawai'i District was selected from seven District Teachers of the Year across the state. All were honored this afternoon at Kailua Intermediate School. Other district winners are:

Honolulu District — Cori Lei Chong, Kaewai Elementary

Central O'ahu District — David Arakaki, Moanalua Middle

Leeward O'ahu District — Shari Takahashi, Nanaikapono Elementary

Windward O'ahu District — Suzanne Cummings, Kailua High

Maui District — Leighton Nakamoto, Kalama Intermediate

Kauai District — Kevin Matsunaga, Kamakahelei Middle

The Polynesian Cultural Center, the State Teacher of the Year program's corporate sponsor for 22 years, will award $500 to each top district teacher.

The teacher of the year will also get an additional $1,000 from the Polynesian Cultural Center and a free one-year lease of a 2007 Mazda CX-7 from the Hawaii Automobile Dealers Association.

Each district winner also received instructional software and classroom technology from the SMARTer Kids Foundation of Canada.
