Obama top fundraiser in Isles with at least $335,363

Advertiser Staff

U.S. Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign continues to dominate when it comes to fundraising in Hawai'i, according to the latest compilation by the Federal Election Commission.

The Hawai'i-born Illinois Democrat has raised $335,363 in the Islands this year through the end of September, far more than any other presidential candidate. Obama's Hawai'i supporters have estimated that the senator has actually raised about $460,000 in the state. The FEC's number is lower because it does not cover contributions under $200.

U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., has raised $42,141 in the Islands. Unlike Obama's supporters, local Clinton backers have said they have not been actively raising money for Clinton.

U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, the only candidate to campaign in the Islands, has raised $18,343.

Overall, Hawai'i donors have given $553,061 to presidential candidates through September, with $441,844 going to Democrats and $111,217 going to Republicans.

Here are the Hawai'i fundraising numbers by the other candidates:

  • U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.: $26,423.

  • Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R): $25,280.

  • Former North Carolina U.S. Sen. John Edwards (D): $25,097.
