Vitale set to fight on card in San Jose

Hawai'i's Falaniko Vitale will participate in a four-man tournament that will highlight a mixed martial arts card put on by the Strikeforce organization on Nov. 16 at San Jose, Calif.
The semifinals and final of the tournament will be held that night, so the winner of the tournament must defeat two opponents with only a few hours of rest in between bouts.
The tournament will be in the middleweight (185 pounds) division.
Vitale, who is 24-7, is the first fighter selected by Strikeforce to participate in the tournament. The other three will be named later this month.
The winner of the tournament is expected to receive a championship bout against Strikeforce middleweight champion Frank Shamrock.

BYU-HAWAI'I SWEEPS NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR
Noelle Filimoeatu had 14 kills, Faylynn Merrick added 12 and Tanza Buroker 10 to lead Brigham Young-Hawai'i to a 30-14, 30-22, 30-22 victory over Notre Dame de Namur in a Pacific West Conference volleyball at Cannon Activities Center in La'ie.
BYUH is 8-14 overall and 5-4 in the PacWest. Notre Dame de Namur is 10-8 and 6-4.
LeeAnn Mapu had 11 digs to lead BYUH.
The Seasiders dominated with 11 team blocks to four for Notre Dame de Namur.
Emily Evans lead the Argonauts with 12 kills.
GOLF
PHENGSAVATH, AMATEURS WIN TITLE AT TURTLE BAY
The GolfLink, Inc. team — pro Joe Phengsavath and amateurs Carol Arakawa, Glenn Hirayama, JoAnn Takamiyashi and Loreen Kunisaki — captured the title at the third stop on the Aloha Section PGA Foundation/Castle Resorts & Hotels Pro-Am Series, last week at Turtle Bay.
Jerry Mullen and Tim Herek tied for low-pro honors at 3-under-par 69.
The series hopes to raise enough money for a full four-year scholarship for the University of Hawai'i golf program, for a Hawai'i resident with financial need. The final series stop is Nov. 30 at Pearl Country Club.
MAKALEI AMATEUR EARLY DEADLINE IS SATURDAY
Saturday is the deadline for Early Bird registration for next month's Makalei Amateur Championship.
Entry fee is $125, a $50 savings off the regular entry fee. A portion of the proceeds benefits FRIENDS of The Children's Justice Center of West Hawai'i.
The tournament is over Veteran's Day weekend, Nov. 10 and 11.
