Brushfire disrupts phone service near Lahaina

Advertiser Staff

LAHAINA, Maui —A brushfire has disrupted phone service to an estimated 500 customers in Ka'anapali and Honokowai.

Two phone cables were damaged by the fire, which started around 11:15 a.m. today near the Lahaina Civic Center, county officials said. The north-bound lane of Honoapi'ilani Highway will remain closed while phone lines are repaired.

Three highway lanes near the civic center that were closed earlier have reopened, but traffic remains congested, police said. Hanaka'o'o Beach Park and the Ka'anapali Golf Course also were briefly closed but have reopened.

The fire burned approximately 50 acres before being brought under control.

The fire spread from the civic center mauka to the cane-haul road below cornfields in the area. One utility pole also was damaged by the fire and repairs are being done. Electrical service was not affected.
