BUSINESS BRIEFS
Seminar for seniors on scams

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Experts from the state Executive Office on Aging will hold a seminar tomorrow to help inform senior citizens about identity theft.

The office said the seminar is in response to a number of "troubling reports" of telephone scams against seniors, attempting to get them to provide personal identification over the phone.

"With open enrollment for Medicare Part D currently under way, seniors are particularly vulnerable at this time," the office said in a news release.

The seminar will start at 9 a.m. at the Lanakila Senior Center, 1640 Lanakila Ave.

For more information, call Pamela Cunningham of the Executive Office on Aging at 586-4185.

DISCOUNT FARES ON ATA AIRLINES

ATA Airlines, a carrier that claims to have the most direct flights to Hawai'i destinations from the West Coast, has begun another airfare sale, featuring a $124 one-way fare between Honolulu and Los Angeles.

The air carrier also is offering other off-peak discount fares to Hawai'i, including $139 one-way between Honolulu and Phoenix and $159 between Hilo and Oakland.

The discounts come about two weeks after it had a similar sale. The current sale ends Oct. 23, with seating limited. The carrier said people not buying the fares on its www.ATA.com site will pay $10 more.

INGLIMA TO JOIN BARNWELL BOARD

Barnwell Industries Inc., a Honolulu-based real estate and drilling company, said it has appointed Robert J. Inglima Jr. to serve on its board of directors.

Inglima is an attorney who has his own private practice in New Jersey, according to a regulatory filing made by Barnwell.

The company recently lost one of its directors when Erik Hazelhoff-Roelfzema, a World War II hero in his native Netherlands, died on the Big Island at age 90.

Barnwell shares closed unchanged at $15 yesterday on the American Stock Exchange.
