Former Davis Cup captain will hold clinic, camp here

Former U.S. Davis Cup captain and Olympic coach Tom Gullickson will be in Hawai'i next week for a doubles clinic and Wailea's Fantasy Camp.

Gullickson will oversee the doubles clinic Tuesday, Oct. 23 at Oahu Club (6800 Hawai'i Kai Dr.). It is scheduled to run from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and will focus on strategy, positioning and technique. The public can observe, but participation is limited to club members. From there, Gullickson will fly to Maui for the Wailea Fantasy Camp, Oct. 24 to 28. He will be joined by Mats Wilander and Jonathan Stark. The camp is designed for "avid adult tennis players" ranging in skill from recreational to tournament level. Gullickson was ranked as high as 38th in his playing career, and ninth in doubles with his twin, Tim. Jennifer Capriati, Todd Martin and Pete Sampras were some of his students. He coached the U.S. to the Davis Cup championship in 1995. After Tim died in 1996, Tom formed the Tim & Tom Gullickson Foundation to fund support programs that assist brain tumor patients and their families.

In other tennis news, three Hawai'i teams returned from the Mainland with high national finishes:

  • Old Airport Men's 4.5 won the USTA National League Championship in Tucson, Ariz. Team members are Jerome Kanuha and his son Dru, Jayme Depontes and son Nainoa, Jim Anderson, Gifford Matsuoka, Hector Mendoza, Chris Eigen, Mark Deckwitz, Lawrence Lowe, Lyle Kaneshiro and Gerrick Nagata. There were 1,045 4.5 men's teams in the U.S. this year.

  • A Honolulu team took third at the USTA League 3.0 Championships held at Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas. The Honolulu team defeated Boise, Idaho, 3-2 in the third-place match. Earlier, it lost to Plano, Texas, 3-2, in semifinals. The team is captained by Primo Castro, Jr., with players Henry Delgado, Richard Devincente, Herman Dombrowski, Richard Ige, John Lokia, Jerome Laurente, Blaine Murobayashi and Gaylord Nishimura.

  • A Kane'ohe team finished fourth at the USTA Junior Team Tennis 14 & Under Advanced National Championships, last week in Tucson, Ariz. The team lost to Orlando, Fla., in the third/fourth-place match. The team is coached by Humphrey Poei and players are Andrea Baysa, Marco Kobayashi, Roman Kop, Bobbi Oshiro, Karlene Pang and Darin Poei.

    This is the 27th year of USTA League. It has grown from 13,000 participants in a few parts of the country to over 625,000 players across the nation.
