Preps: Seabury Hall wins third MIL volleyball title

With the Spartans three points away from being swept by Moloka'i, Zucco moved Alex Bolduc to outside hitter. Bolduc, an MIL first team All-Star last season who had been adjusting to a new position this year, quickly rediscovered her form and helped the Spartans rally to a 22-25, 25-23, 25-16 victory last night at the Kamehameha-Maui gym and a third consecutive overall MIL title.
"Moloka'i played near perfection in that game,'' Zucco said to The Maui News. "We were having a tough time. They were just unforgiving. Ultimately, we made a couple of adjustments on our block. We switched Alex Bolduc to outside, and she started to put some balls away.
"Alex played phenomenal. She was seeing the ball really well and we rode it and it turned out fantastic for us.''
Bolduc provided the kill that tied the second game 23-23, and Kaimi Rocha kills provided half of the Spartans' final six points. Seabury (12-0), ranked fifth in the Advertiser's Top 10 poll, had trailed 22-18.
Bolduc recorded six kills and an ace in the third game, and finished with 12 kills, 10 digs and an ace.
"It kind of just happened,'' she said. "I played right-side hitter all year and it was my goal to play outside hitter and the last game of the match I really got to show what I could do outside.''
In the Division I final, Kamehameha-Maui defeated Baldwin.
Rocha single-handedly kept Seabury Hall in the match early, and finished with a team-high 16 kills. She added 19 digs, two aces and a block. Kaipo Rocha put up 16 kills and 19 digs, and Yacine Meyer had a team-high 21 digs.
"I was just kind of swinging (at) everything I could, and they were just getting to all the balls, and after a while I just decided I had to go for it every time. They were a really, really tough defense,'' Bolduc said.
With the win, the Spartans earned the MIL's state tournament seed. Seabury could be seeded first at the tournament.
"Today was a great warm-up for states,'' Zucco said. "We got a chance to show what we are made of. Not so much in terms of skill but in mental toughness.''
Kelsy Takashima had 11 kills and 23 digs for Molokai (10-2). Ku'ulei Keliikuli-Peters added nine kills and Danna-Lynn Hooper had a team-high 32 assists as well as 15 digs. Jerry Seumalo finished with 16 digs.
"I thought we played well,'' said Farmers coach Matthew Helm. "We prepared well for the tournament, but I thought we let the second set slip away from us. Seabury's a good team, you can't give them any chances and they took every opportunity.''
Moloka'i entered the match assured of a state tournament berth.
"We worked hard to get to this point,'' Keliikuli-Peters said. "We came in here with a lot of confidence and we still have a lot of confidence. So we'll go to state and all we got to do is just work harder and leave nothing behind.''
Takashima and Keliikuli-Peters dominated the first game and early in the second, but the Farmers seemed to have difficulty adjust to Seabury Hall's changes.
"Our passing broke down and they executed off of that,'' Helm said. "They adjusted well. We tried our best and played our hardest. I'm really proud of my girls.''
