Golf: Argentina's Vancsik leads Portugal Masters by one

Associated Press

VILAMOURA, Portugal — Daniel Vancsik of Argentina held a one-stroke lead at the Portugal Masters after shooting a four-under 68 in the third round today.

The Argentinian had four birdies on the back nine for a three-day total of 18-under 198. Charl Schwartzel shot a 66 and Steve Webster had a 67 and were one shot back.

Vancsik goes into the final round with the lead just as he did last week at the Madrid Open, where a quintuple-bogey 9 ended his title chances.

"I like this course because I can hit my driver all the time, which gives me a lot of chances for birdie," Vancsik said. "For tomorrow I will try and stay patient and if my putter is working well, I will have a good chance to win."

Sweden's Robert Karlsson finished with a 65 and England's Ross Fisher had a 68 to sit two off the lead. Lee Westwood, Sam Walker and Peter Hanson all shot 67 to trail by three shots.

Justin Rose finished with a 65 to sit seven shots back in his chase for the European Tour's Order of Merit. The Englishman will top the order with no worse than a second-place finish.

"I felt like it could have been 10 better, but it's a step in the right direction," he said.
