Baseball: Chunichi to face Nippon Ham in Japan Series

Associated Press

TOKYO — Tyrone Woods hit a three-run homer today as the Chunichi Dragons beat the Yomiuri Giants 4-2 in Game 3 of the Central League championship series to advance to the Japan Series.

The Dragons will play Trey Hillman's Nippon Ham Fighters in a rematch of last year's series, which the Pacific League champion Fighters won in five games.

In Saturday's game at Tokyo Dome, Yomiuri jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a homer by Tomohiro Nioka in the second inning.

But the Dragons came back to take a 3-1 lead in the fourth on Woods' second homer of the best-of-five series.

Chunichi catcher Motonobu Tanishige added a solo homer in the top of the seventh.

Chunichi starter Kenichi Nakata picked up the win after holding the Giants to two runs on six hits while striking out 11 over 7-2/3 innings.

It was a disappointing result for the Giants, who were unable to win a game in the playoffs after finishing first in the Central League for the first time in five years.
