It's not too late to join people around the country who are participating in The National Endowment for The Arts' Big Read — an annual celebration of literacy in which the nation focuses together on reading, discussing and interpreting one significant book. This year, that's Amy Tan's best-selling "The Joy Luck Club." Organizers chose it as "a catalyst for encouraging conversations among and within Hawai'i's diverse communities." Events this weekend include a performance by Chinese folk dancers the Phoenix Dance Chamber, 1:30 p.m. today at the Kapolei Public Library. The Louis Vuitton Hawaii International Film Festival screens the film, "The Joy Luck Club," 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Regal Theatres, Dole Cannery. It's followed by a panel discussion with film experts Ruth Y. Hsu, Vilsoni Hereniko and Konrad Ng (director Wayne Wang, originally scheduled to take part, has canceled). Ticket info: www.hiff.org or 550-8457.

AND MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR THESE HIGHLIGHTS:

  • 7 p.m. Wednesday, Liliha Library: Lenora Ching, "The Pickle Lady," shares how to make Chinese treats.

  • 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Waialua Public Library: book discussion with Anna Marie Christiansen.

  • Noon Nov. 3, Hawai'i State Library: a staged reading of "The Joy Luck Club," followed by discussion with Frank Stewart.

There's much more, across the Islands. For a complete statewide list of events, go to www.hawaiicapitalculture.org, and click on the "Big Read" logo.
