Ching captures golf title

Punahou School senior Alex Ching shot a final-round even-par 71 yesterday to capture the 44th annual Oahu Country Club Men's Invitational by five strokes.

Ching finished with a 54-hole total of 11-under 202.

Lorens Chan finished second with 71—207, followed by Taeksoo Kim (70—214).


BASEBALL

HONU, SHARKS WIN

Shintaro Yoshida had two hits and drove in three runs, including the tie-breaker on an eighth-inning sacrifice fly, as the North Shore Honu beat the Waikiki BeachBoys, 5-4, last night in a Hawaii Winter Baseball game at Francis Wong Stadium in Hilo.

Elsewhere, Austin Jackson hit a three-run homer and Ryohei Tanaka allowed three hits and one run in five innings as the Honolulu Sharks beat the West Oahu CaneFires, 8-1, at Hans L'Orange Park.


VOLLEYBALL

HILO, BYUH PREVAIL

Lauren Bayer had 21 kills as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Chaminade, 28-30, 32-30, 30-27, 30-26, last night in a Pacific West Conference match at UHH gym.

Josimara Pinheiro added 19 kills and 10 digs for Hilo (17-5 overall, 8-0 PacWest). Trina Kauliakamoa had 18 kills and 12 digs for Chaminade (9-6, 2-5).

Elsewhere, Agnes Tuilevuka had 14 kills and 11 digs as Brigham Young-Hawai'i (11-8, 7-4) beat Notre Dame de Namur (8-15, 5-5), 30-22, 30-22, 30-22, at La'ie.

BYUH SWEEPS CU

Ashley Hunter and Jill Haar scored goals as Brigham Young-Hawai'i (9-5-1, 6-1) beat Chaminade (0-11, 0-7), 2-0, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference women's match at La'ie.

In the men's match, Michael Akinaka, Shawn Blymiller and Brian Noguera scored as BYUH (7-8, 3-3) beat Chaminade (2-12-1, 0-6), 3-0.


TENNIS

HEINEMANN OUSTED

San Diego's Dean Jackson ousted University of Hawai'i's Sascha Heinemann, 6-1, 6-4, yesterday in the round of 16 at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Western Regional Championships in Malibu, Calif.
