New Zealand, Tonga films part of Pacific Panorama

Advertiser Staff

Pacific Islanders in Communications has teamed up with

the Louis Vuitton Hawaii International Film Festival, to present the program Pacific Panorama, a showcase of films that highlight the voice of the First Peoples from Hawai'i, Polynesia, Oceania and Australasia.

The Pacific Panorama is the first time that HIFF has brought

festival-goers films from throughout the Pacific Rim.

"PIC is committed to telling the stories of the Pacific and one of the ways in which we hope to accomplish this is by tapping into HIFF's existing audience base at their annual film festival. It is important for this audience to be exposed to not

just stories told by Hawaiian filmmakers, but also from those around the Pacific Rim, given Hawai'i's cultural diversity and central Pacific location," said Shane Seggar, PIC program director.

This year's Pacific Panorama features several long and short films, which will be screened throughout the 10-day festival. The works include the features:

  • "ANS Westra: Private Journeys/Public Signposts" from New Zealand

  • "Denias ... Singing on the Cloud" from Indonesia

  • "Lahaina: Waves of Change" from Hawai'i

  • "Maui Boyz" from Germany

Short films in the showcase include "Tavake" from Tonga and "Hands Up! Your Betel Nut or Your Life!" from Papua New Guinea.

"The Hawaii International Film Festival is proud to continue its

longstanding relationship with Pacific Islanders in Communication," said HIFF executive director Chuck Boller. "Our goal in conjunction with PIC is to promote and support films from the Pacific. The Pacific Panorama section of the festival is of particular significance because it recognizes these films with a new award."
