Life Foundation receives more than $400,000

News Release

The Life Foundation' annnouced last night that it received $424,500 in grants to fund its HIV care and prevention services from July 1 to Oct. 1.

The grants, according to a Life Foundation news release, are:

  • Office of Minority Health - $250,000: Life Foundation was awarded a three year grant from the Office of Minority Health to address the specific needs of Native Hawaiian, Asian, and Pacific Islander (NHAPI) communities at risk for HIV and/or HIV positive on the island of O`ahu. Life Foundation plans to target underserved populations on the Leeward Coast and the hidden homeless population throughout the island.

  • U.S. Conference of Mayors - $60,000: A nationally competitive project, Life Foundation was granted a one-year contract to conduct HIV prevention efforts for Native Hawaiian people.

  • McInery Foundation, G.N. Wilcox Trust, and MAC AIDS Fund - $50,000: Using the appropriate medications on the timetable prescribed by physicians in critical to living with HIV. For newly diagnosed clients or those with life factors such as mental illness or substance abuse that impair the ability to maintain a medication schedule, Life Foundation will launch a new program that pairs clients who have a successful history with medications with those who have difficulties keeping the schedule. Officially entitled Peer-Based HIV Medication Adherance Program, the program nicknamed "Med Buddies" will begin later this year. Funders assisting in launching the innovative project include McInerny Foundation - $15,000; G.N. Wilcox Trust - $10,000; MAC AIDS Fund - $25,000.

  • Hawaii Community Foundation, Kaiser Permanente, and Macy's West Passport Fund - $49,000:

  • On the heels of a recent award with the State of Hawaii's Adult Mental Health Division, Life Foundation will break new ground in addressing the comprehensive health needs of those who are both HIV-positive and suffering from mental illness. Assisting in making this vision a reality include Hawaii Community Foundation - $40,000; Kaiser Permanente - $2,000; Macy's Passport Fund - $7,000.

  • Until There's a Cure Foundation - $8,000: In support of the No Shame Campaign, the Until There's a Cure Foundation awarded Life Foundation a grant in the amount of $8,000. The campaign is a multi-media campaign that addresses HIV related stigma and shame in Native Hawaiian, Asian and Pacific Islander communities in Hawai'i.

  • Abbott Laboratories - $5,000: This grant will support education forums on HIV care and medications for the more than 700 HIV positive men, women and children Life Foundation supports.

  • Safeway Foundation - $2,500: To foster the nutrition necessary to maintain a healthy immune system, Life Foundation offers a hot lunch and dinner for clients each month. Prepared entirely by volunteers, the program recently received funding from Safeway Foundation to be used to purchase food for the meals
