Rainbow Wahine soccer team beats host San Jose State, 1-0

Advertiser Staff

Taryn Fukuroku scored with less than five minutes to play in regulation as Hawai'i defeated San Jose State, 1-0, yesterday in a Western Athletic Conference soccer game at San Jose, Calif.

The Rainbow Wahine snapped an eight-game road losing streak dating to last season and improved to 10-3-2 overall and 3-0 in the WAC. It is second time in program history that UH has started 3-0 in conference play.

Fukuroku took seven shots, including four on goal, and finally broke through with her team-high eighth goal of the season at the 85:39 mark. Jessica Domingo started the play with a pass to Ambree Ako in the middle of the field. Ako put a through ball to Fukuroku, who beat goalkeeper Nina Butera to the far post.

With a strong wind at their backs in the first half, the Spartans were able to produce eight corner kicks, but were unable to capitalize on any one of them.

Jennifer Guadagnolo had one of two shots on goal for the Spartans (3-11-2, 1-2 WAC), but her point-blank shot five minutes into the second half was stuffed deep in the box by Rainbow Wahine goalie Kori Lu.

Lu and Nicole McClure teamed for the 'Bows' seventh shutout of the season.

Hawai'i's road trip continues with a game against Utah State Friday at Logan, Utah.

HILO SWEEPS HPU

Kristen Grant scored on a penalty kick in the 80th minute as Hawai'i-Hilo escaped an upset bid by Hawai'i Pacific with a 1-0 Pacific West Conference victory yesterday at Kea'au.

"I think we thought we could just coast through this thing," Hilo coach Travis Clarke said. "HPU came to play. They were really out their playing. We were just skating by."

Hilo improved to 9-6 overall and 6-1 in the PacWest. HPU fell to 2-11 and 1-6.

"We played better in the second half," Clarke said. "They fouled a player. PK ... it's a win."

At the 79:23 mark, HPU was called for a foul in the penalty box. Grant beat HPU goalie Veronica Ellman, who finished with eight saves, by punching the ball into the lower left corner of the goal.

In the men's match, Drew Geis scored a goal and assisted on another, and Dustin Daley added two assists as Hilo overcame a 2-0 halftime deficit with four second-half goals to beat the Sea Warriors, 4-2.

Luis Lanz, Carlos Lopez and Tristan Whitman also scored for Hilo (6-9 overall, 3-3 PacWest).

Linus Ekden and Akihide Adachi scored for HPU (5-7, 3-3), which led 2-0 just 18 1/2 minutes into the game.
