Makaha brushfire completely contained

Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Fire Department reports that the Makaha brushfire is completely contained and has demobilized its companies as of 6:30 p.m. today.

While there are some smoldering hot spots in the interior of the burned area, they do not currently pose a threat of flaring up. If there is a flareup, HFD will send companies to size up the situation and deploy necessary resources to protect any threatened structures, as needed.

More than 60 firefighters battled the fire today, including 45 from HFD, five from the Federal Fire Department, eight from the Army Fire Department and the remainder from the Department of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) and the Army Environmental Group. In addition four helicopters dropped water on the fire today including HFD's Air 1, the Honolulu Police Department's helicopter and two civilian helicopters. One was contracted by DOFAW, the other contracted by the Army Environmental Group.

The fire began Friday and burned more than 1,000 acres. The cause of the fire has not been determined.

HFD reminds the public to be careful with the use of fire and prevent wildfires from starting. There is still a great fire danger in many areas of O'ahu because of the prolonged drought and accumulation of dry brush and grasses.
