Oahu's catastrophe-response group to meet tomorrow

Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Department of Emergency Management's Telecommunication Utility Working Group will hold its first meeting tomorrow morning in the County Emergency Operating Center.

The group, composed of representatives of companies that provide a telecommunication or utility service to O'ahu residents, aims to ensure timely and efficient communications when a catastrophe next hits O'ahu.

The 10 a.m. meeting will feature opening remarks by Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann, as well as a presentation by George Burnett, telecommunication branch chief for the state Civil Defense Division.

The group's objectives include:

  • Reviewing and evaluating current response and restoration methodology.

  • Developing strategies that will ensure a timely and efficient response to and recovery from a catastrophic event on Oahu.

  • Establishing a forum where telecommunication and utility representatives can discuss methodology, strategy and concerns regarding disaster response, recovery and system restoration.

  • Assisting with the city's emergency preparedness, response and recovery planning process.
