Tennis: Murray advances to Round 2 at St. Petersburg

Associated Press

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia — Second-seeded Andy Murray defeated Max Mirnyi 6-2, 6-2 today and advanced to the second round of the St. Petersburg Open.

The 16th-ranked Murray broke Mirnyi twice in each set to win in 52 minutes.

"It's very difficult against him because he serves well and puts a lot of pressure by coming to the net," Murray said. "But today I served well and returned well, and I got in front of him early and he wasn't able to rush me."

Mirnyi said Murray surpassed him in all aspects of the game.

"He has neutralized my attacking game with passing shots and there were no doubts about the winner of the match," Mirnyi said.

Earlier, defending champion Mario Ancic defeated Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador 6-4, 6-1.

After trading breaks early in the first set, Ancic made a decisive break in the ninth game of the first set. He then won four consecutive games in the second set.

Ancic, who missed most of the season after injuring his shoulder in February, is returning to form. He's reached the quarterfinals in Stockholm and Madrid in the last two weeks.

Also, qualifier Marin Cilic ousted wild card Michail Elgin 6-3, 6-4, Simone Bolelli defeated veteran Jonas Bjorkman 7-6 (8), 6-2, and qualifier Lukas Dlouhy beat wild card Pavel Chekhov 7-6 (5), 6-4.

Third-seeded Mikhail Youzhny defeated Justin Gimelstob 6-2, 6-4, and fourth-seeded Potito Starace rallied past Kristof Vliegen 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3).
