Service Nov. 18 for surf pioneer John M. Kelly Jr.

A memorial service for surf pioneer and activist John M. Kelly Jr. will be held Nov. 18 at Kapi'olani Community College.

The service will start at 10 a.m. in the cafeteria in the 'Ohi'a Building. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m. There will be a photo display and short video by David Brown.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Surfrider Foundation O'ahu Chapter, KAHEA: The Hawaiian Environmental Alliance, or the American Friends Service Committee.

Kelly, who founded Save Our Surf, died Oct. 3 at his home in Black Point. He had long suffered from Alzheimer's disease. He was 88.

He is survived by his wife, Marion, daughters Kathleen and Colleen, son Keahi Meyers and two grandchildren.
