Legislature: Say has no Superferry conflict

Advertiser Staff

The state Legislature's representatives have decided House Speaker Calvin Say had no conflict of interest in presiding over the special session even though his son was one of the 249 Superferry employees furloughed two weeks ago.

While Say took a seat with the other members, Rep. Blake Oshiro took over the gavel because Majority Leader Kirk Caldwell wanted to be free to participate in floor debate.

Meanwhile, House Vice Speaker Jon Riki Karamatsu, who was recently arrested for alleged drunk driving, has submitted a letter of resignation from his vice speakership, but he will only be suspended from the post until the Legislature reconvenes in January.

Caldwell will serve as temporary vice speaker in the interim.
