Google teaming wth Nielsen on TV data

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Google Inc., seeking to expand its technology beyond the Internet, teamed with research company Nielsen Co. to compile data on television audiences and help advertisers target potential customers, Bloomberg News reported.

Google TV Ads is an online program for buying and selling commercials that lets advertisers upload spots and produces reports on how many people watched them on a second-by-second basis. Nielsen will provide demographic information on the viewers, the companies said today in a statement.

Google, the owner of the world's most popular search engine, is using its Web-based technology to tap the TV market, Bloomberg said. Television advertisers spent $31.6 billion in the first half, compared with the $5.52 billion spent on Internet ads, according to market researcher TNS Media Intelligence.

In April, Mountain View, California-based Google announced a partnership to sell commercials on EchoStar Communications Corp.'s 125 satellite-TV networks through Google TV Ads. The service began in May, collecting data from set-top boxes.
