Rotarians finishing homeless family's new Nanakuli home

Advertiser Staff

The Rotary Club of Metropolitan Honolulu will be helping a Nanakuli family of 13, which has been homeless for 15 years, to landscape their new home at 89-201 Nanaikala St. on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Landscape architect and native plant specialist Dennis Kim has selected a native Hawaiian plant for each of the Kaneakua family's 10 children to plant at the home, according to Kathleen Rhoads Merriam of Rotary Club of Metropolitan Honolulu.

A crew from Green Thumb Inc. supervised the installation of an irrigation system donated by Diamond Head Sprinkler Supply last weekend and Native Plant Source and Makakilo Nursery provided plants for Saturday's work.

Volunteers from Habitat for Humanity Leeward O'ahu, and Rotary Clubs of Metropolitan Honolulu, Honolulu Sunrise, Pearl Harbor, Downtown Honolulu, and Pearlridge have been working every Saturday since February to help the Kaneakua family build their seven-bedroom, two-bath home, which is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Saturday is Rotary Club's "Make a Difference Day."
