Kawaiahao Church starts $14.5 million building project

Advertiser Staff

Construction will start Monday on a $14.5 million multi-purpose center at Kawaiaha'o Church on Punchbowl Street.

Two existing buildings will be demolished to make way for the state-of-the-art center, but the landmark church will be untouched.

At Kawaiaha'o today, members gathered to perform an oki ceremony, thanking God for use of the two buildings that will be torn down and sharing memories of the facilities. The buildings were built in 1940 and 1929, and held offices and a great hall.

"Today's ceremony is a blessing for a new beginning," said Kahu Curt Kekuna, senior minister at Kawaiaha'o Church.
