Preps: Waimea wins KIF volleyball title

Tatum Gonsavles had 12 kills to lead host Waimea past Kaua'i, 26-24, 25-10, 25-19, in a playoff for the Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation title yesterday.

Waimea (7-2) clinched the league's only berth to the state Division II championships that start next Wednesday. Kaua'i (4-5) was the KIF's first-round winner while Waimea won the second round, forcing the playoff.

State qualifiers

Division I—ILH: 'Iolani, Kamehameha, Punahou. MIL: Baldwin, Kamehameha-Maui. OIA: Kahuku, Mililani, Moanalua, Roosevelt.

Kailua will play Kalani tonight for the OIA's fifth berth. The loser will play the BIIF runner-up next Monday for a state berth. The BIIF semifinals start on Friday.

Division II—ILH: Hawai'i Baptist, University High, Word of Life. KIF: Waimea. MIL: Moloka'i, Seabury Hall. OIA: Farrington, McKinley.

Castle will play Kalaheo tonight for the OIA's third and final berth. The BIIF, which has three berths available, starts its tournament tomorrow.
