Honu, BeachBoys win in winter baseball

Blair Johnson pitched a three-hitter over five innings with four strikeouts and Jeramy Laster hit his league-leading fifth home run as the North Shore Honu beat the West Oahu CaneFires, 6-1, last night in Hawaii Winter Baseball at Hans L'Orange Park.

Mat Gamel batted 3 for 4 for the Honu (14-6), who had 13 hits. Jonathan Lucroy added two hits and two RBIs.

Drew Naylor followed Johnson with two scoreless innings. But the CaneFires (6-13) spoiled the shutout bid in the ninth when Anthony Hatch homered off Takashi Kamoshida.

Earlier, Lucas Duda batted 3 for 4 and drove home the go-ahead run to lead Waikiki past Honolulu, 6-5.

The BeachBoys (9-11) trailed 5-4 entering the bottom of the seventh. Michael McKenry's solo homer tied the score. Michael Wilson then doubled to left, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Duda's single.

Fuminori Yokogawa went 2 for 3 for the Sharks (10-9).


VOLLEYBALL

UHH, CU PREVAIL

Josimara Pinheiro had 17 kills as Hawai'i-Hilo remained unbeaten in the Pacific West Conference with a 30-21, 30-27, 30-19 victory over Dixie State last night at the UHH gym.

Fabiane Seben and Hillary Hurley each added 10 kills for Hilo (18-5 overall, 9-0 PacWest).

Cami Johnson led Dixie (5-20, 3-7) with 14 kills.

Elsewhere, Samantha Miller had 12 kills, 10 service aces and seven digs as Chaminade (10-6, 3-5) beat Grand Canyon (7-14, 3-6), 30-16, 30-22, 30-28, at McCabe Gym. Dana Edington led Grand Canyon with 11 kills.

BYUH, HILO SWEEP

Jill Haar and Sarah Welty each scored two goals as Brigham Young-Hawai'i defeated Hawai'i Pacific, 4-1, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference women's game at La'ie.

Natasha Aiono had two assists for BYUH (10-5-1 overall, 7-1 PacWest), which moved into a share of first with Hawai'i-Hilo in the conference standings. Chelsie Sato scored for HPU (2-12, 1-7).

In the men's game, Brian Noguera had a goal and an assist as BYUH (8-8, 4-3) beat HPU (5-8, 3-4), 4-1.

Elsewhere, Karissa Robertson scored two goals as Hilo (10-6, 7-1) beat Chaminade (0-12, 0-8), 3-0, in a PacWest women's game at the Saint Louis School field.

In the men's game, Dustin Daley scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 10th minute of overtime, as Hilo (7-9, 4-3) beat Chaminade (2-13-1, 0-7), 3-2.

  • Defending champions Andrew Feldmann and Larry Stubblefield won two matches yesterday to advance to today's semifinals of the Golf Concepts/E-Z-Go Aloha Section PGA 4-Ball Match Play Championships at Oahu Country Club.

  • The University of Hawai'i men's team finished 13th in the 17-team Sycuan Collegiate Invitational yesterday in El Cajon, Calif.

  • Hawai'i-Hilo's Kiilani Matsuyoshi shot 76—152 yesterday to place third at the Sonoma State Invitational in Santa Rosa, Calif. The Hilo women's and men's teams both finished in fourth in their divisions.
