'Whole lot of Aggies' Hawaii-bound

Will the last Aggie out of the New Mexico State athletic department in Las Cruces, N.M. tomorrow turn out the lights?

With both its fall sports — football and women's volleyball — scheduled to play at the University of Hawai'i this weekend, NMSU is combining them, along with other personnel into a 150-person charter, officials said.

"There's a whole lot of Aggies headed your way," said volleyball coach Mike Jordan.

The No. 13-ranked Aggie volleyball team plays No. 11 Hawai'i Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. Saturday night the volleyball team will come to Aloha Stadium to watch the football team play the unbeaten Warriors. The charter is scheduled to leave soon after the football game ends.

There had been speculation the Aggies might also pack along their band, but athletic department spokesman Tyler Dunkel said, "no band."

Dunkel said this is, "(the) first time we have done this together." He said the roundtrip El Paso-to-Honolulu flight would cost approximately $220,000 and result in a savings for the athletic department but was not immediately able to say how much of a saving was projected.

Rarely have the UH football and women's volleyball teams played road games on the same weekend, but the idea of having a school's teams pair up on the road is something Western Athletic Conference members are increasingly taking a look at to save on travel costs, WAC officials said. "It is something we'll be talking about," said Karl Benson, WAC commissioner.
