Senator to receive national award for cancer work

Hawai'i State Senator Rosalyn H. Baker will be presented with the Exemplary State Elected Official Comprehensive Cancer Control Award today at the 2007 Hawaii Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalition (HCCCC) Meeting.

The meeting is from 11 a.m. to noon at the Japanese Cultural Center.

Baker's work in cancer control includes championing an increase in the state's cigarette tax in 2006 and steering legislation that resulted in Hawaii becoming a smoke free state. Baker, a 31-year cancer survivor and health care advocate, has served as Vice-Chair of the Hawaii Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalition for the past two years, and will become chair in fall of 2007.

Baker represents State Senate District 5 - South and West Maui, Kapalua, Ka'anapali, Lahaina, Ma'alaea, Kihei, Wailea, Makena.
