Biggest full moon of the year expected tonight

Advertiser Staff

Tonight's full moon is expected to be the widest and brightest full moon of 2007.

Carolyn Kaichi, manager of the Bishop Museum Planetarium, said in a news release that some full moons are larger than others, and that tonight's will be as much as 14 percent wider and 30 percent brighter than lesser full moons we've seen earlier this year.

The moon's orbit is an ellipse with one side 30,000 miles closer to Earth than the other. The full moon of this month is on the near side — called perigee — making it appear bigger and brighter.
