Firefighters received the call for a two-alarm building fire at 2393 Tantalus Drive at 5:56 a.m. and responded by 6:04 a.m., said Capt. Terry Seelig of the Honolulu Fire Department.

The fire was under control by 6:52 a.m.

"That's a good rapid response time on this narrow and winding road," Seelig said. "The neighbors responded to the fire well and did all the right things. The next-door neighbor to the fire is a family of nine and they had just practiced fire drills last week, so if there is one good thing that comes out of this it's that it shows it pays to practice how to get out safely in case of fire."

Lei Saffery, who lives next door to the destroyed home with her four children and four other adults, said loud noises woke the family up, but when they looked outside they could see and feel the flames.

"It was blazing," Saffery said. "I don't know how to describe it ... like a big bonfire you could just feel the heat from it.

"The kids knew what do because of what we practiced last week. As soon as we yelled fire they were out the door and at the neighbor's house across the street."

Saffery credited neighbors with saving her home, which suffered minor burn damage.

"The flames were close but they kept hosing down the house until firefighters got here. They saved it for us."

Cause of the fire is under investigation and the total amount of damage hasn't been determined yet, but the home and garage were completely destroyed.

Flames and smoke rise up from a house built in a ravine below 2393 Tantalus Drive. Cars in the home's street-side carport were destroyed. Next-door neighbor Lei Saffery said huge flames scorched the eaves of her house.
