Preps: Baldwin girls edge Kekaulike for bowling title

WAILUKU — The Baldwin High School boys and girls bowling teams went a perfect 6-0 in their final Maui Interscholastic League matches yesterday at Maui Bowling Center, completing a sweep of the team championships.

The Bears' Corey Gushikuma and Maui's Victoria Baldovi-Wong claimed the league's gold medals. Maui's Roland Caniaveral and Baldwin's Mika Uyeno were silver medalists, and the Sabers' Randall Yamaoka and Kyra Calhau were bronze medalists.

All members of both the Baldwin boys and girls teams, and all individual medalists, qualified for the state tournament, scheduled for next Thursday and Friday at Hilo Lanes.

Tied with King Kekaulike entering yesterday's matches, the Baldwin girls swept St. Anthony 3-0 to finish with a 19-8 record, a game ahead of Na Ali'i, who beat Maui High 2-1.

Uyeno had a 181, Chyane Balios had a 137 and Bree Aguinaldo added a 133 for the Bears. The Trojans (3-24) were led by Anna Ross' 141 and Ching Man So's 122.

Na Ali'i girls (18-9) got high games from Mikaela Lum (167) and Tiana Fernandez (159). Baldovi-Wong had a 168 and Calhau a 154 for the Sabers (14-13).

The Baldwin boys, who had already clinched the title last week, finished the regular season with a 3-0 sweep of St. Anthony. Kallen Yamasaki had a high game of 193 and Avery Lau had a 174 for the Bears (26-1). Frank DeFellicia (175) and Kameron Kaneshina (138) led the way for the Trojans (3-24).

In the other boys match, Maui finished the season with a 2-1 win over King Kekaulike. Caniaveral had a 175 and Yamaoka a 165 for the Sabers (17-10). Na Ali'i (8-19) were led by Kip Asato's 160 and Robert Watanabe's 152.
