TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"Scrubs" season opener, 8:30, NBC. This show has been wildly erratic for six seasons. There have been wonderful episodes, with explosive wit. There have been others that have a stop-and-go pattern, never letting the humor build. Still, credit "Scrubs" for being fresh and different. When it began, most comedies were taped with an audience; "Scrubs" showed the visual possibilities of shooting movie-style. Tonight, J.D. ponders his romance with Kim; Elliot wonders about her upcoming marriage to Keith. Also, the janitor finally has a girlfriend.

OF NOTE

Halloween movies. The best of the bunch are John Carpenter's violent-but-well-made "Halloween" (1978), 3 p.m., AMC; and M. Night Shyamalan's brilliant "The Village" (2004), 8 p.m., ABC Family. Others include the light "Twitches Too" (2007), 8 p.m., Disney; and the fourth and fifth "Halloween" films (1988 and 1989), 5 and 7 p.m., AMC.

"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," 7 p.m., FX. The guys should really work on first impressions. Last week, Mac was mistaken for a serial killer; tonight, Dennis is mistaken for a child molester.

"Ugly Betty," 7 p.m., ABC. Betty tries online dating and ends up at a bowling alley.

"My Name is Earl," 7 p.m., NBC. Earl is supposed to talk to an inmate's girlfriend when she visits. He flubs it so badly that the couple splits.

"30 Rock," 7:30 p.m., NBC. Carrie Fisher plays a classic writer from the old days, joining the staff. Alas, the biting approach of old keeps being rejected now, setting up confrontations between Liz and Jack.

"The Office," 8 p.m., NBC. When his office gets to do a commercial, Michael wants to show his creativity.

"Grey's Anatomy," 8 p.m., ABC. Callie tells the other surgeons about the affair between her husband George and Izzie. Also, Alex's former Jane Doe patient visits, Cristina is snubbed by a surgeon she admires and on Halloween, and Meredith feels haunted by her mother's ashes.

"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," 8 p.m., CBS. Here's an early-season rerun from last season: The victim was a former boxer living in a brothel.

"Without a Trace," 9 p.m., CBS. After her boyfriend is killed by police, a woman disappears. Police suspect her brother, a gang leader.
