HONOLULU — An actor on the hit TV series "Lost" issued a statement today apologizing for his arrest on suspicion of drunk driving.

Daniel Dae Kim, through his publicist in California, said he was "deeply ashamed and embarrassed" and will fully cooperate with the police.

"It saddens me to know that I jeopardized the welfare of the kind people of Hawai'i, a community that I love and call my home," the statement said.

Honolulu Police arrested Kim early Thursday after an officer spotted him driving erratically at about 2:30 a.m. He was booked at the downtown police station and released after posting bail.

He had a blood-alcohol level of 0.168, twice the legal limit.

Kim is set to appear in O'ahu District Court on Nov. 23.

"To my friends, family, colleagues and fans, thank you for your kind words of support." Kim said. "To those I have disappointed I can only ask that you accept my heartfelt apologies. I am truly, truly sorry."

The 39-year-old actor was born in Busan, South Korea, but grew up in Easton, Pa., and has a master's degree from New York University.

On the show, he portrayed a chauvinistic thug who at first was overly protective of his wife, Sun, but then began to warm up to other characters on the mysterious island where "Lost" is set.

Trained in classical theater, he had to learn Korean for the role and then had to learn to practice speaking English with a Korean accent as his character learned to speak English.

In addition to work on several TV series before "Lost," he had small roles in "Spider-Man 2," "The Hulk" and "Crash."
