CBK: Some Nevada fans upset over ticket sales changes

Associated Press

RENO, Nev. — Some Nevada basketball fans are upset that ticket prices are going up this season and even more upset that the school is eliminating all general admission seating.

The three sections that were general admission last season will be upper level end zone reserved this season at the Lawlor Events Center.

"They're making it difficult for people to come support it when for years they were begging for support," longtime fan Marko Boscovich of Sparks said. "I was going there when they could barely get 5,000 in that place."

"They could've raised the prices and just called it the same thing. But when there's no general admission there's really no fan base," he told the Reno Gazette-Journal.

Success has made Nevada basketball tickets sizzling hot. The Wolf Pack has a 106-27 record in the past four seasons and reached the NCAA Tournament each year.

Individual game tickets go on sale Nov. 13.

The record for season ticket sales was last season's 9,004 and that will soon be surpassed. The Pack sold 6,394 season tickets for the 2005-06 season. Lawlor capacity is 11,784.

"It's unbelievable how many requests we're getting on a daily basis. I think we're going to be close (to 10,000 season tickets)," said Keith Hackett, associate athletic director for facilities/operations.

"We have an awful lot of ticket requests. Our dilemma now is because people are buying new (season) tickets, there's not many seats available. There are none down low so people's choice is to sit up in the higher levels of the arena if they want a season ticket. It's a moving target because it changes every hour, we're dropping people that are not renewing. We've had a really tremendous retention rate."

Hackett said he's had only two calls complaining about the elimination of general admission seating.

"I think in many ways it works to people's benefit," Hackett said. "That way they're going to have a seat. It was a management team decision (to eliminate general admission)."

Adult individual game tickets are $22 in advance for center reserved and $24 on game day, $20 for corner reserved in advance and $22 on game day, and $16 for upper level end zone reserved and $18 on game day. The prices are $2 more than last season.

Youth and senior citizen discounts are only on advance sales.

Season tickets are $225 for center reserved, $200 for corner reserved and $180 for the upper level end zone reserved.

"What it comes down to is Greek and Roman societies had general admission seats," Boscovich said. "How do we not have general admission? That's silly.

"I don't think that's very fan friendly for people who have shown their support, the little guy. It's already tough enough for families or even when me and my girl go you're out $50, $100 anyway."

There is one bargain on the Pack schedule. The exhibition game against Seattle Pacific on Nov. 3 isn't part of the season ticket package. All tickets are $5 with open seating.

The Greeks and Romans would have loved it.
