Donate cell phones to help domestic-violence victims

Advertiser Staff

Fans attending tonight's University of Hawai'i women's volleyball game at 7 p.m. may donate used cell phones and accessories to benefit victims of domestic violence.

The HopeLine drop boxes will be located at the main entrance of the arena from 6 to 7:30 p.m. during the game, featuring UH and New Mexico State at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Fans will receive a free UH T-shirt for every phone donated, a news release said.

The program is a collaboration of Verizon Wireless and the UH Athletics program.

Through the HopeLine program, used wireless phones, batteries and accessories from any service provider are recycled, or refurbished and sold, the release said. Verizon Wireless uses the proceeds to award grants and wireless phones with airtime to nonprofit human services and law enforcement agencies to aid survivors of domestic violence.
