TUNG CHAN NAMED A BEST LAWYER

Tung Chan, the state commissioner of securities for the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, was named one of the Best Lawyers Under 40 by the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association.

The group's award recognizes individuals within the Asian/Pacific American legal community under the age of 40 "who have achieved prominence and distinction in their fields of endeavor and have demonstrated a strong commitment to civic or community affairs."

Chan is Hawai'i's top state securities regulator and has worked with chairman Christopher Cox and the Securities and Exchange Commission to combat securities fraud against seniors, including taking a joint action with the SEC on the first major case to emerge from a year-long nationwide sweep of investment seminars targeted against seniors.

As commissioner, Chan also is the chief administrator for business registration in Hawai'i, which has consistently won first-place awards from the International Administrators Commercial Association for its online services.

CAESARS CLEANERS BEING BOUGHT

U.S. Dry Cleaning Corp., the Palm Springs, Calif.-based company that owns Hawai'i's Young Laundry, said it has agreed to buy Honolulu-based Caesars Cleaners.

The acquisition of Robinson Corp., the company that does business as Caesars, will add $2.26 million of revenue to U.S. Dry Cleaning's annual sales. Caesars operates four stores and a central operating plant in Honolulu.

Michael Drace, U.S. Dry Cleaning president and head of the company's Hawai'i operations, said the acquisition will expand market share in the state.

The sale is expected to close before the end of 2007. U.S. Dry Cleaning is paying $2.15 million in cash, convertible and assumed debt and shares of common stock for Robinson.

AUSTRALIAN CHERRY IMPORTS EYED

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is considering allowing import of sweet cherries from Australia into the continental United States and Hawai'i.

The agency said its recently completed analysis found that various measures should be sufficient to help prevent introducing plant pests or noxious weeds with the import of sweet cherries.

The USDA's pest risk analysis and environmental assessment are available for review and comment at www.regulations.gov. The docket number is APHIS-2007-0128. The comment period ends Dec. 11.
