WAILUKU, Maui — Maui County residents can play a round of golf for as little as $3 at the municipal Waiehu Golf Course, under new "twilight golf fees" announced yesterday by the Maui County Parks and Recreation Department.

"The twilight fees are designed to give those who work during the day a chance to hit the links in the evening for nine holes of golf at an unbeatable value," Zachary Helm, Parks and Recreation deputy director, said in a news release.

The Waiehu course is owned and operated by the county.

The twilight special runs from 3 to 5 p.m., seven days a week. Twilight fees for senior residents (60 years and older) are $3 on weekdays and $5 on weekends.

For Maui County non-senior residents, the twilight rate is $5 daily. Other Hawai'i residents pay $15. The twilight rate for visitors is $25 on weekdays and $35 on weekends.

Opened in 1930, the Waiehu Golf Course is one of the oldest municipal courses in the state. It was approved in 1926 by Gov. Wallace R. Farrington and designed and built by county engineers under the leadership of the old County Board of Supervisors, including longtime local politicians Eddie Tam and then-Chairman Sam Kalama. The Board of Supervisors is the predecessor of the current County Council.

Facilities at the 18-hole course include a pro shop and a restaurant. Equipment and cart rentals are available. Instruction is available with teaching pro Art Rego.

A Junior Golf Program is offered through the Maui Junior Golf Association. The 174-acre course offers several oceanfront holes and was the site of the 1996 USGA Amateur Links Championship.
