Barbosa steps down as Punahou soccer coach

Jorge Barbosa, who guided Punahou to three girls soccer state championships and five Interscholastic League of Honolulu titles, has stepped down as head coach after 10 years at the helm.
According to a school press release, Barbosa "will be taking time off from coaching to focus on his family and other professional interests."
Matthew Martinson, who teaches in Punahou's P.E. department, will serve as interim coach this season. Martinson has nine years experience as a head coach at the intermediate, JV and varsity levels, according to the release.

MURANAKA PITCHES WAIKIKI OVER HONOLULU
Kyohei Muranaka struck out five in five innings in his first Hawaii Winter Baseball start to lead the Waikiki BeachBoys over the Honolulu Sharks, 5-3, at Hans L'Orange Park in Waipahu yesterday in a seven-inning scheduled game.
Muranaka (1-0, 2.11 ERA) allowed three runs on six hits as the BeachBoys cut the Sharks' lead in the East Division to 1 1/2 games.
Shane Lindsay picked up his first save of the season, pitching the final two innings without allowing a run.
Lucas Duda doubled and drove in two runs for Waikiki, while Michael Wilson also doubled and scored twice.
Austin Jackson hit his third home run of the season, a two-run blast in the third inning, for Honolulu. Argenis Diaz had two hits for Honolulu to boost his league-leading batting average to .419.
The BeachBoys face the West Oahu CaneFires today at 6:30 p.m. Honolulu will face the North Shore Honu at noon. Both games are at Hans L'Orange Park.
NORTH SHORE SHUTS OUT CANEFIRES, 2-0
Chris Valaika batted 3 for 3 and drove in all of the runs in the North Shore Honu's 2-0 win against West Oahu CaneFires last night in a game also scheduled for seven innings.
Valaika homered with one out in the top of the third and doubled home a run in the seventh for the Honu (16-6).
Starter Andrew Cruse (1-1) allowed one hit with five strikeouts in three innings for the Honu. Brett Sinkbeil followed with four scoreless innings, allowing a hit with three strikeouts.
Steven Johnson (2-2) allowed a run in 4 2/3 innings for the CaneFires (6-15).

BYUH MEN, WOMEN ROLL TO VICTORIES
Jill Haar scored two goals in the first half as Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat UH-Hilo, 2-1, in a women's Pacific West Conference soccer match yesterday in La'ie.
Becky Ploeger had three saves for BYUH (11-5-1, 8-1).
Karissa Robertson scored for the Vulcans (10-7, 7-2).
In a men's PacWest match also at La'ie, Adam Maciejewski scored twice as BYUH rallied from an early deficit to beat UH-Hilo, 4-1.
The Vulcans (7-10, 4-4) scored first on a goal by Dustin Daley, but the Seasiders responded with four consecutive goals to improve to 9-8, 5-3.
HAWAI'I PACIFIC MEN, WOMEN EARN WINS
Andre Whitt scored twice to lead Hawai'i Pacific (6-8, 4-4) to a 5-0 win over Chaminade (2-13-1, 0-8) at Saint Louis Field yesterday in a Pacific West Conference men's soccer match.
Matt Martinez, Akihide Adachi and Thimo Langner also scored for Hawai'i Pacific. Brandon Ray assisted on two of the goals.
In a women's PacWest match, Hawai'i Pacific (3-12, 2-7) got goals from Ashley Dolan and Britney Abregano to knock off Chaminade (0-13, 0-8), 2-0.
