West Oahu economic conference set for Nov. 8

The West Oahu Economic Development Association and Enterprise Honolulu will be co-sponsoring their fourth annual conference, to discuss West O'ahu's current and future economy, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Honolulu Country Club.

West O'ahu, once known as the center of O'ahu's sugar industry, has undergone a major transformation as development of new homes, businesses, retail establishments, industrial parks, as well as new schools and social services, continue to rapidly grow. The conference will provide an insight and an overview of job growth and economic development in West Oahu.

Gov. Linda Lingle will deliver the keynote address, with speakers from nonprofit organizations, commercial, and residential developers also presenting information.

Panelists and speakers include David Rae, Kapolei Property Development, LLC; Jeff Arce, The McNaughton Group; John Howell, Easter Seals; Bram Begonia, Kroc Center (Salvation Army); Punky Pletan-Cross from Hale Kipa; Laura Robertson, Goodwill Industries; Rick Hobson, Gentry Homes; Bob Bruhl and Dean Uchida from DR Horton, Schuler Division; and Jeffery Prostor from Brookfield Homes. Guy Hagi from KGMB9 News will serve as emcee for the event.

Planned topics include:

  • The Economic Impact of the City of Kapolei

  • Kapolei Commons: Breaking New Retail Ground in West O'ahu

  • The "Heart" of O'ahu: Charitable Organizations Move West

  • West O'ahu — Setting the Pace for New Residential Construction

  • State Projects including the Judiciary Building, UH West Oahu, DHHL development, educational facilities, and the redevelopment of Kalaeloa.

    Deadline for registration is Nov. 1. Registration is $70 for WOEDA and Empower Oahu members, or $80 for nonmembers. The fee includes continental breakfast, buffet lunch and conference materials.
