92nd Fire Fighter Recruit Class graduates Wednesday

Advertiser Staff

Fire Chief Kenneth G. Silva has announced that the Honolulu Fire Department's 92nd Fire Fighter Recruit Class will graduate on Wednesday, Oct. 31. A graduation ceremony will be held in the McCoy Pavilion at Ala Moana Regional Park from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

The recruits completed 23 weeks of rigorous training and are now certified to the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) Fire Fighter I and HAZMAT Awareness and Operations levels. IFSAC certification confers recognition that a firefighter's training has provided professional qualifications that meet national standards.

Besides studying and developing skills in fire fighting, rescue procedures, emergency medical service, and hazardous materials response, the recruits found time to perform the following community activities:

  • Assisted with the annual Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Camp at Camp Erdman in Mokule'ia.

  • Participated in the Hawai'i Dragon Boat Race competition at Magic Island and won first place in the City and County of Honolulu Division.

  • Participated in the Hawaii Fire Fighters Association "Fill the Boot" campaign. This annual fundraising event raises money over the Labor Day Weekend to help support the MDA.

The graduation ceremony will include the following activities:

  • Remarks by Chief Silva and Managing Director Wayne Hashiro

  • Presentation of badges and pinning by family members

  • Administration of the HFD Oath of Office

  • Recitation of the Fireman's Prayer
