HBA's Nakamoto an ILH champion by 0.26 seconds

Hawai'i Baptist Academy's Matthew Nakamoto edged Punahou's Chris Burniske by 0.26 seconds to win the boys race at today's Interscholastic League of Honolulu cross country championships at Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park.

Nakamoto finished in 16 minutes, 50.70 seconds in the 3-mile race. Burniske, who made a final push to catch Nakamoto in the final stretch, finished in 16:50.96.

The Punahou boys won the team title with 42 points. 'Iolani was second with 51.

In the girls race, Maryknoll's Haley Abing finished the 3-mile race in 19:52.73. Abing, who competes for Maryknoll but attends La Pietra, led the entire race.

Maryknoll, which competes in cross country as a team of runners from small ILH schools, won the girls title with 49 points, edging Punahou by four.
