Saint Louis wraps up ILH championship

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

Saint Louis struck early, often and quickly in a rout of Pac-Five last night, and Crusaders coach Delbert Tengan can rest easy for the final week of the regular season.

Saint Louis is the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion.

Micah Mamiya completed 10 of 12 passes for 223 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed for two scores as Saint Louis pounded Pac-Five, 55-10, at Aloha Stadium.

"It's a tremendous achievement," Tengan said. "The ILH is so tough; to wrap it up with a game to go is a testament to our players, our coaching staff. Our kids know this is one goal for the season and we have another goal coming up."

Saint Louis, ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's Top 10 poll, will be the league's lone representative in the Division I state tournament.

"We're not really happy yet; we're not celebrating yet," Mamiya said. "We're just going to take it one game at a time."

Saint Louis (8-0, 5-0) put this one away early against the Division II Wolf Pack.

After punting on its first possession, Saint Louis scored on its next seven possessions of the first half.

The Crusaders used only 20 plays to cover 274 yards on their scoring possessions.

Mamiya threw 55- and 53-yard touchdown passes to Lucas Gonsalves, and a 43-yarder to Billy Stutzmann.

Mamiya also scored on 4- and 35-yard option keepers. Gonsalves and Isaac Savella also rushed for scores.

Savella's 1-yard touchdown run made it 49-0 with 3:02 remaining before halftime.

The Crusaders racked up 314 yards in the first half, while the Wolf Pack gained 112 with 68 coming on a run by Phillip Sarubbi in the second quarter.

Mamiya, a senior, completed his final seven passes of the half and didn't play in the second.

"The offensive line did their job," Mamiya said. "They gave me enough time to throw the ball to the receivers."

The 35-point mercy rule began at the start of the second half, and the only scores were a 2-yard run by Saint Louis' Hoku Isaia with 2:04 left in the third, and a 30-yard field goal by Pac-Five's Josh Mun with 6:19 left in the game.

Pac-Five (1-7, 0-5) gained 155 total yards with only 26 coming through the air.

"Our defense has been solid all year long," Tengan said. "That has been the backbone of our team and reason for our success."

Saint Louis gained 399 total yards, with five plays going for more than 25 yards.

"We have a lot of big-play potential," Tengan said. "We feel like we have a lot of weapons in the receiving corps as well as the running game."
