Shark-warning signs removed on North Shore

Advertiser Staff

Shark-warning signs were removed from Chun's Reef and Laniakea on the North Shore of O'ahu this morning after lifeguards reassessed offshore waters.

A police helicopter spotted a 12-to-15-foot tiger shark off Chun's Reef and the Laniakea areas yesterday.

Lifeguards still are warning beachgoers to use caution in the area. Ocean safety officials suggest that beachgoers:

  • Do no swim, surf or dive without a buddy.

  • Stay out of the water at dawn, dusk or night.

  • Don't enter the water if you have open wounds or are bleeding.

  • Avoid murky waters, harbor entrances and areas near stream mouths.

  • Do not wear high-contrast clothing or shiny jewelry.

  • Refrain from excessive splashing.

  • Do not enter the water if sharks are known to be in the area and leave the water quickly and calmly if a shark is sighted.

  • If fish or turtles start to behave erratically leave the water.

  • Remove speared fish from the water or tow them at a safe distance behind.

  • Swim or surf at beaches patrolled by lifeguards.
