Boy killed in Waialua moped collision identified

Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office tonight identified the boy killed today in a collision of two mopeds in Waialua as Gjino Kanahele, 14.

Police vehicular homicide investigation Sgt. Lorenzo Ridella said today's fatal accident on Kaukonahua Road, nine-tenths of a mile north of Kamananui Road, occurred at 1:04 p.m.

The two riders were westbound when Kanahele's moped hit the right-shoulder guardrail near a left bend in the roadway, rebounded back onto the roadway and hit the moped being operated by a boy, 15.

The two boys were thrown from their mopeds. Both were taken to Kapi'olani Medical Center at Pali Momi where Kanahele died.

The 15-year-old boy is in serious condition.

The crash closed traffic in both directions on Kaukonahua Road and police had to reroute traffic at Wilikina Drive and Kamananui Road and the University of Hawai'i Experimental Farm.

The death is O'ahu's 52nd traffic fatality of the year as compared to 79 on the same date in 2006.
