Kalihi murder suspect has criminal record

An unemployed Kalihi man arrested yesterday in connection with the stabbing death of his wife was convicted in September 2005 for three felony firearm offenses.

Melchor Balolong Adviento, 50, was sentenced to five years probation on the firearm counts.

He also has prior convictions for misdemeanor second-degree reckless endangering and third-degree assault, and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, which is a petty misdemeanor.

Adviento was arrested for second-degree murder at his Kalihi residence at 2110 Kahaha St., where his wife's body was found in the bedroom. Adviento was then taken to the The Queen's Medical Center, where he was recovering today from stab and slash wounds to the chest, arms and stomach.

For paperwork purposes, Adviento today was released pending further investigation as investigators have been unable to question him. He is likely to be charged with murder upon his discharge from the hospital.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office today identified the victim as Erlinda Adviento, 44. An autopsy determined cause of death as injury to the heart and lung due to a stab wound and manner as homicide.

Lt. Bill Kato, head of Honolulu police homicide investigations, said neighbors and relatives said Melchor and Erlinda Adviento were alone in the apartment unit, which was locked from the inside with a dead bolt, yesterday when the stabbing occurred.

The couple had been arguing and a police officer responded to the address on a 911 complaint. Melchor Adviento, who was bleeding, answered the door and the officer later found Erlinda Adviento's body in the bedroom.

Erlinda Adviento was a registered nurse employed by a care home.
