Chef Mavro among Gayot Top 40

Advertiser Staff

Chef Mavro, George Mavrothalassitis' fine dining restaurant at King and McCully Streets, is the only Hawaii restaurant named to the Gayot "Top 40 Restaurants in the U.S." for 2007.

The respected online and in-print guide — which focuses its ratings primarily on quality of the food — gave the James Beard Award-winning restaurant the only 18 of 20 point rating in the Islands.

Chef Mavro's unusual approach — menus entirely changed each son and wine pairings developed by consensus at staff tastings — previously won the chef a James Beard Award. It has also received honors, such as the Honolulu Advertiser 'Ilima Awards, from all local media.

Mavrothalassitis, who recently opened Cassis by Chef Mavro on Queen and Bethel, continues to oversee operations at Chef Mavro along with longtime chef de cuisine Kevin Chong.
