Major accidents down 16 percent on Big Island

Big Island police announced yesterday a 16 percent decrease in major accidents so far this year compared to a year ago. So far in 2007 there has been 1,731 major accidents, compared with 2,054 at the same time in 2006.

Last week, police on the Big Island arrested 27 motorists for drunk driving, fiive who were involved in a traffic crash. Four were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 1,090 DUI arrests on the Big Island compared with 1,028 during the same period last year, an increase of 6 percent.
